Former Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ibrahim Sannie Daara, has expressed deep anguish after watching highlights of the Ghana Premier League match between Dreams FC and Accra Lions.
The game, officiated by referee Maxwell Hanson, ended in a 1-0 victory for Dreams FC but has sparked significant controversy.
Accra Lions have alleged biased officiating, citing contentious decisions captured on video that they believe unfairly influenced the outcome of the match.
Sannie Daara took to social media to share his dismay, highlighting the significant investments made by Accra Lions in Ghanaian football:
For the first time in 20 years, I shed tears at 1 am when I saw highlights of Dreams FC vs. Accra Lions. I have firsthand knowledge of the millions of dollars Lions have invested in Ghanaian football, and seeing this being undermined was too painful. I am a human being; I have a soul.
In response, Accra Lions released a strong statement criticising the GFA for poor league organisation and calling for urgent improvements in refereeing standards.
Dreams FC, however, dismissed the accusations, labelling Accra Lions’ reaction as hypocritical. They noted that refereeing errors are a global phenomenon and urged their opponents to use appropriate channels for complaints.
The win moved Dreams FC to 14th on the league table, while Accra Lions remain in the relegation zone, sitting 17th with 13 points from 16 games.
The need for reform in Ghana Football
This incident has reignited calls for the GFA, led by Kurt Okraku, to prioritise the development of the game. Observers argue that the quality of refereeing in the Ghana Premier League has declined significantly, posing risks of hooliganism due to poor officiating.
Critical attention to these issues is essential to restore the integrity of Ghanaian football and protect its future.
