On 2nd January 2024, a devastating fire tore through the bustling Kantamanto Market in Accra's Central Business District, leaving countless traders and business owners in despair. The blaze destroyed shops and livelihoods, particularly affecting those who rely on their businesses for daily income.
In the wake of this tragedy, several prominent figures from various sectors have come forward to offer their support to the victims, demonstrating the power of community solidarity.
Wendy Shay
Among the notable philanthropists is Wendy Shay, the Ghanaian songstress.
The popular musician has shown her compassion for those affected by the fire, donating a sum of GHC 10,000 to assist the traders in rebuilding their lives. This generous gesture underscores her commitment to supporting the people of Ghana in times of need.
Stanley Mensah Kodia
Stanley Mensah Kodia, a well-known businessman and entrepreneur, popularly referred to as KOD, also joined the ranks of those offering aid. Together with his brother, Salim, KOD contributed a significant GHC 100,000 to support the fire victims. The donation is a testament to the importance of corporate responsibility and the role that successful individuals play in uplifting communities in distress.
Ohene Kwame Frimpong
Ohene Kwame Frimpong, known in political circles as O.K. Frimpong and the Member of Parliament-elect for Asante Akyem North Constituency, also stepped forward to offer aid. During a visit to the disaster site, O.K. Frimpong recognised the immense challenges faced by the traders, many of whom operate on loans.
To help alleviate their financial burden, he donated some money for those who were impacted by the fire. His visit was not just about financial support but also about offering hope and strength to those in despair, as he prayed for the victims' protection and resilience during this difficult time.
Nana Kwame Bediako
Adding to the wave of support was Nana Kwame Bediako, a business mogul and presidential aspirant known by his moniker Cheddar. After visiting Kantamanto Market on 3rd January 2025 and witnessing the aftermath of the fire, he pledged to support the traders in a substantial way.
Cheddar donated GHC 50,000 and announced plans to lead the efforts to rebuild the market, ensuring that the affected vendors have the resources to get back on their feet and continue their businesses.

These donations come as a beacon of hope for the traders who have lost their goods and, in many cases, their means of income. The outpouring of support from these influential figures highlights the importance of coming together as a society to help those in need. As the market recovers from this tragedy, the kindness shown by Wendy Shay, KOD, O.K. Frimpong, and Cheddar will serve as a reminder of the strength of community and the power of collective action in times of crisis.
