The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has advised the government to postpone school reopening on the scheduled January 3, 2024, date over unpaid debts.
CHASS said monies owed to schools resulting from the government's carting of food items from various regional distribution centers to schools are a challenge that needs to be resolved before schools reopen.
It is, therefore, urging the government to cooperate by not reopening schools right after the Christmas break until the matter is resolved. This decision follows an emergency meeting by the National Executive Council of CHASS on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, a statement signed by the National Secretary, Baro Primus, confirmed.
The reasons accounting for this recommendation were contained in earlier letters written to the Hon Minister of Education through the Director General dated 12th August 2024, 13th November 2024, and 20th December 2024, requesting government to make good the payment of all arrears in respect of perishables and recurrent fees as well as monies owed to schools emanating from the carting of food items from various regional distribution centers to schools.
CHASS added that all parents and guardians will be notified through all appropriate channels available and through the Regional branches of CHASS and the various school Parents Associations.
This decision, CHASS said, has become necessary due to the failure of appropriate authorities to adhere to its requests. The statement further advised its members to act according to directions of leadership.
Leadership appeals to all members to take note of the content of this correspondence and adhere to them. Any action contrary to this directive will be considered as a betrayal of trust to the course of CHASS.
CHASS concluded that it would notify its members of their next line of action.
