Early Bird JHS and Methodist Girls SHS (MEGHIS) have been declared winners of the Social Enterprise Business (SEB) and Socially Responsible Business (SRB) categories respectively, for the 2017 SAGE National Entrepreneurship Competition.
This year’s competition came on with a lot of heat, as 14 out of 20 qualified teams participated in the finals, 6 teams competing in SRB and 8 teams in the SEB categories.
MEGHIS made an impressive presentation on its recycling business, showcasing its innovative products ranging from books, clothes, bags and furniture made from car tyres, amongst others. Their grand debut earned them the 1st position in the SRB category and the overall best team to represent Ghana at the World Cup in Ukraine in August. This makes MEGHIS the first girls winning team in SAGE Ghana Cup. MEGHIS also won a contract to supply products to an investor, and a free ICT training from Soronko Academy to help them learn coding and website development amongst others.
Early Bird JHS who were the reigning champions for both SEB and SRB categories, won 2nd position in SRB category, losing the first position to MEGHIS. They however retained their position as winners in the SEB category, with an excellent presentation on SaveSense Initiative- a student savings project that integrates with the bank. They thus qualify as the second option to represent Ghana at the SAGE World Cup in Ukraine in August. Early Bird remains the only Junior High School that has won the SAGE National Cup, competing with Senior High Schools.
Mfantsipim SHS team won the Indomie Challenge Awards for the most creative idea in how Indomie can be served as a full meal. Bagabaga Junior High School from the Northern Region-Tamale, won the special judges award, donated by Mrs Veronica Mills Lamptey.
Positions for the SEB Championship is as follows: Early Bird JHS – 1st place, Aduman SHS – 2nd place, St. Augustine’s College – 3rd place, Bishop Herman College– 4th place, Bagabaga Demonstration JHS – 5th place, Presbyterian Boys’ SHS-Legon – 6th place, Odorgono SHS – 7th place and Presbyterian SHS-Tema – 8th place.
Positions for SRB Championship is as follows: Methodist Girls SHS – 1st place, Early Bird JHS – 2nd place, Ghana National College & St. Augustine’s College – 3rd place, Mfantsipim SHS (Gyacool Clothing Team) – 4th place, Mfantsipim SHS (Advanced Security Systems) – 5th place.
Students were inspired by Author and Malta Guinness Brands Manager, Roland Ofori, who also donated copies of his book, “366 Irrefutable Widsom Keys” to the winners. Knutsford University College pledged scholarships for winners of 2017 SAGE National Cup, and Twellium foundation extended open arms to projects with social impact.
Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE) is a global institution with presence in over 30 countries, aimed at raising the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders.
