At least ten persons have been confirmed dead in yesterday’s terror attacks in London.
The coordinated attack included a van attack on the London Bride and a knife attack in the nearby Borough Market. Another stabbing incident at Vauxhall has been ruled as unrelated.
Police say they are treating this incident as a terror attack.
The deceased include three males who shot and killed by the police. The three are suspected to have carried out the attacks. The suspects were dressed in camouflage uniforms, had fake suicide bomb belts tied around their waists and wore vests with canisters strapped to them.
According to eyewitness accounts, a white van driving at about 80km/h drove into pedestrians on the London Bridge and ran over them.
The van continued till it got to the Borough Market where three men got out of the van and immediately ran towards the pedestrians and started stabbing them, chanting “Allah! Allah!”.
As many as 48 people sustained various degrees of stab wounds.
Commissioner for the Metropolitan Police, Cressida Dick, in a statement read live confirmed the deaths and commiserated with the families and relatives of the victims.
“Obviously my thoughts are with all of those affected, those injured and the families of those innocent people who died whilst out enjoying a Saturday night in our Capital,” Commissioner Dick said in a statement.
The Commissioner also commended the courage of officers who worked bravely to contain the incident also praised civilians who risked their own safety help halt the incident.
“I heard truly remarkable stories of extraordinary brave actions by officers – on and off duty – who were first on the scene. I also heard of colleagues from other emergency services and members of the public who ran towards the danger as this incident unfolded. Many, many people risked their own safety to help others and to treat those seriously injured and indeed to confront the suspects involved.”
Commissioner Dick finally called for calm among the public and assured them that her outfit was working with National Counter Terrorism Police and intelligence agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident.
