Facebook has provoked a mass outpouring of sadness and regret after launching a new feature which reminds people of painful moments and all the cringe-worthy things they did in the past.
It has just launched Memories, a page which is ‘a single place on Facebook to reflect on the moments you’ve shared with family and friends, including posts and photos, friends you’ve made, and major life events’.
But it’s really reminding people of death, break-ups, lost friends and the highly embarrassing posts they wrote as a kid.
One person said the new feature made her ‘wanna throw up from embarrassment’ while another said it ‘triggered’ negative memories. We have decided not to name the people who wrote the tweets to protect their privacy.
‘If you didn’t already know how lame you used to be, Facebook Memories will never fail to remind you,’ wrote one Twitterer. ‘Zuckerberg is an agent of Satan,’ another proclaimed.
‘Who benefits from Facebook memories of events that they’ve spent years suppressing?’ A key theme to people’s grumbles is how the social network’s nostalgia drive reminded them of the grim passing of time and the sunset of their golden years of youth.
‘This was six years ago I was 14 so skinny,’ wrote a woman who shared a teenage picture in which she posed with her face to the floor and her bum in the air.
A man in his late teens also cringed at a post he’d written as a kid which said: ‘I can’t wait until my birthday bitch: I’m turning 12.’ ‘Facebook Memories keep reminding me of the time in High School when I thought it’d be cute to dye my hair blonde,’ a woman recollected in a post featuring a prominent vomit emoji.
‘All it does is remind me of all the people I don’t talk to anymore and how thin I was.’ The break-up of relationships and friendships also featured heavily in the posts of people who’d suffered an encounter with Zuck’s enforced recollection machine.
‘Thanks Facebook Memories for reminding me of not only when I had a boyfriend, but also loyal friends,’ a woman tweeted. ‘My Facebook memories is always comical seeing the numerous “friends” I’ve had through the years lolol,’ another revealed.
One lady took the opportunity to share a very private memory: ‘Thanks Facebook memories for reminding me why my ex is my ex. ‘He took great pleasure in humiliating me at every opportunity just to get the laughs. I left that relationship feeling worthless and I’m still dealing with some of the damage caused. Feeling lucky to be free from that.’
