Defending champions Aduana Stars will begin their journey to retaining the Ghana Premier League (GPL) title with a tough away test against Elmina Sharks.
The Fire Boys had a disappointing outing in Africa, having failed to qualify for the group stages of the CAF Champions League after a humiliating 4-1 aggregate loss to Algerian side ES Setif.
However, they have the chance to make a perfect start to their domestic campaign when they travel to face a wounded Elmina Sharks at the Papa Kwesi Nduom stadium.
The Sharks will prove tough nuts to crack, especially following last week’s painful 1-0 loss to Dreams FC. That, coupled with the fact that the Elmina-based side are playing at home means Aduana will have to dig deep to get the needed result.
Quality-wise the defending champions are miles ahead, but the Sharks are a team made for the big occasion, having recorded some impressive results at home in recent times.
Sunday’s game is expected to pitch two sides that are in dire need of three points and it makes for an intriguing puzzle which team would emerge victorious.
Last season, Aduana defeated Elmina Sharks both home and away, but the Sharks are a much better side this season after battling their way to remain in the topflight following a mixed debut campaign.
The Dormaa-based club, though, are still very much the team to beat in the league but will have to do it all over again if they are to retain the title.
After a woeful week in Africa, punctuated by flight delays and issues of funding, a win will certainly raise spirits among the Aduana faithful.
However, with a wounded Elmina Sharks standing in their way, it remains to be seen which club will emerge from the fixture unscathed.
