The Mary Star of the Sea International School at Kasoa-Amanfro in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region recently played host to the renowned Japanese drummer Joji Hirota and his group.
Hirota was brought to Ghana to perform at a concert as part of Japanese government's 50th-anniversary celebration in Ghana.
Mary Star being the only school in Africa which has established Japanese Cultural Center was the obvious choice for Japanese nationals to hold exchange programs at the school.
Though the center has attracted a lot of high profile Japanese this is the first time such an entertainment icon has visited the center.
The three-man drumming group thrilled the children with their spectacular drumming performance in various Japanese cultural flavors.
They mounted their giant musical instrument on the compound and started teaching the children how to beat the drums while the cultural troupe of the school performed cultural dances to entertain the visitors.
Two years ago the school authorities in consultation with the Japanese Embassy in Ghana built the Japanese Cultural Center at the school to offer an opportunity to students who want study Japanese Cultural programs.
The Japanese Embassy as part of the partnership agreement with the school to post one Japanese volunteer to teach at the Center every year.
According to the Director of the center Tony Annor since the inception of the Center children in his school have been doing very well in Japanese Cultural Exchange programs.
He noted that students from Mary Star have been winning multiple prizes any time they participated in Japanese cultural events organized by their Embassy in Accra.
He said the center is open and therefore use the opportunity invite students across the country to come and learn the Japanese culture and languages to enable them benefit from various exchange programs Japanese government has for students around the world.
In her address the Headmistress of the school Mary Ekenlebie thanked Joji Hirota for honouring their invitation adding she looks forward for more interactions which according to her will benefit the students.
