The Member of Parliament for the Odododiodioo Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Mr. Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie, has pledged his support to the Street Academy with the construction of an Astroturf within the school’s premises. Central to this commitment, he stated, is the acquisition of the necessary documentation to commence the project.
Mr. Ashie noted that the Astroturf would enable the school to play its role in curbing the street children menace. He made this assurance during the academy’s annual stakeholders’ meeting and fundraising event held over the weekend, themed “Empowering Street Children: Health and Wellness.”
The MP emphasized that “every child has the right to play,” pledging, “I will do my best to secure the needed documents for the project.” He highlighted that over the years, the academy’s academic programmes have transformed children surviving on the streets into successful adults, urging other members of society to support the initiative.
Accra Street Academy, originally formed in 1985 as a boxing arena, now functions as a school for deprived children. Most of its population of over a hundred pupils consists of neglected children picked from the streets of Jamestown and surrounding areas. Through the support of benevolent members of society, these children are taught and provided with two meals and a snack daily.
In the 2025/26 academic year, 22 pupils were absorbed by the Accra Metro Education Directorate as they transitioned into various Junior High Schools. These pupils continue to return to the academy for academic support. Yvonne Abba-Opoku, a chartered governance advisor and senior executive in the nonprofit and charity sector, stressed that the best gift to give a child is education.
