Tipper Truck Owners and Drivers Association with support from the Ketu South Municipal Assembly yesterday began a reclamation of 30-acre land degraded through sand winning at Nogokpo Hadikukope.
The Forestry Commission is expected to plant trees on the land that would be reclaimed.
The Ketu South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Maxwell Kofi Lugudor, announced this when he led staff of the assembly, security personnel and members of the association to inspect the ongoing reclamation exercise at Nogokpo Hadikukope.
He expressed worry that sand winning in the district was being undertaken illegally, and urged persons involved in the activity to acquire permit from the Minerals Commission.
Mr Lugudor said, “the wanton destruction of land in the district is worrying and if nothing is done, we may lose all our land. We have many more of such degraded lands dotted all over the district.
“Happily, the people degrading the land have now seen reason to collaborate with other stakeholders to reclaim land.”
Mr Lugudor asked sand winners to obtain legal documents and also urged them to reclaim lands degraded through their activities.
Mr Epiphany Klutsey, chairman of the association, noted that the Minerals Commission and other institutions pursued members, following their illegal activities.
He said, “Since we were not having peace to do our work, we saw the need to levy ourselves so that we can reclaim lands we have degraded. Traditionally, we thought the land belonged to us and our families so we can do anything with it.”
Mr Klutsey said members of the association would work closely with the Minerals Commission to acquire legal documents to enable them carry out their work without prevention from the Assembly and other state agencies.
