Six persons with disabilities have been given scholarships by the GAB Foundation, a charity organisation, to study at the Laweh Open University in Accra.
Currently, three persons including James Bortey Samuelsome,James Ayaba and Joshua Ayiku, have already enrolled in the school and studying various courses while the other three would receive their scholarships in the coming days.
This was disclosed at the 18th edition of the GAB Foundation annual thanksgiving and fundraising dinner recently held in Accra.
Founder of GAB Foundation, Prof. Goski Alabi said, the move formed part of efforts to empower persons with disabilities and ensure they become very useful to society.
“Over the years, we have focused on trade and made several donations including sewing machines, cash to start businesses but we decided to also give the opportunity to some of them to have education,” he stated.
She added that, education was very important for everyone and disabled persons must not be left out as far as acquiring knowledge is concerned.
“We want to move them from semi illiteracy, that is Junior Senior High and Senior High to the tertiary level to truly give them the empowerment they deserve,” she stated.
Prof. Alabi, said the beneficiaries would give hope to others living with disabilities and also ensure that, they make education a priority.
Children of parents with disabilities, she said could also benefit from the scholarships since they realised that, the parents were unable to assist their wards in school due to their conditions.
The foundation she added, was committed to supporting persons living with disabilities and look forward to receiving support from corporate entities.
Wheelchairs and other accessories were presented to the persons with disabilities to enhance their movement.
