The Accra Circuit Court yesterday granted bail to a middle aged man, in the sum of GH 54,900 with two sureties, for defrauding 25 people by false pretences.
George Darko, who was charged with 22 counts, allegedly took a total amount of GH¢54,900, from his victims, promising to help them get enlistment into the military, police and Fire Service, but failed to honour his promise.
The accused, who pleaded not guilty, will appear again on August 21 and 22, for hearing.
An attempt by the accused for an out-of-court settlement was rejected by the court, presided over by Mrs. Ruby N.A Quaison.
She explained that enlistment fraud concerning the security services had become rampant and needed to be dealt with.
Chief Inspector Isaac Agbemehia, presenting the facts of the case, said Darko who lives at Ashongman Estates, Accra, defrauded 25 people who were interested in joining the security services.
The prosecution said between the year 2017 and 2018, Darko introduced himself to Aikins Kofi Asare as a national security operative, and said he could assist him to get enlisted into any of the security services.
Chief Insp Agbemehia said Asare gave Darko’s mobile number to his friends, who were also interested in the security recruitment.
The court heard that Darko directed his victims to his residence, and asked each of them to pay a fee of GH¢6,000.00, but asked them to pay an initial amount of GH¢1,500 to enable him (Darko) start the processes.
Chief Insp Agbemehia said the victims paid monies ranging between GH¢ 1000 and GH¢4,000, totalling GH¢54,900.
He said Darko after receiving the money failed to honour his promise, and went into hiding, but he was arrested on July 20, 2018.
