Models showcasing the sample designs of the students at the launch
The 2017 edition of the Graduate Fashion Show by the Radford University College was launched in Accra on Thursday amidst splendid showcasing of some of the fashion designs by the students.
Slated for May 27, 2017 at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra, this year’s Graduate Fashion Show is expected to build on the successes of the previous events to showcase innovative designs for the fashion world.
At the launch, samples of the designs were modelled to the admiration of guests who gathered at the university’s premises for the event.
The samples ranged from corporate, casual and African wear, to wedding gowns innovatively designed with colourful fabrics.
The annual show showcases products of the fashion design graduating class, as a way of demonstrating their talents and readiness for the job market.
Launching the event, Nana Dwomoh Sarpong, Executive Chairman of the University, congratulated the graduating students for their output, saying it was indicative of the university’s commitment to provide quality education in the area of fashion designing.
He was impressed about the samples of the fashion students and urged them to continue to effectively explore their talents that have been shaped by the education from the university.
“As the first university in Ghana to offer a degree programme in fashion designing, this demonstrates our objective of combining practical orientation with scholarship,” he said.
Dr Paul Effah, President of the RUC, for his part, said the university remained committed in building passion for excellence in entrepreneurship, adding that its various courses have been designed to develop the ability for creativity among the students.
Mrs Yvonne Ntiamoah, Head of the Fashion Design Department, in her remarks, explained that the university has an intense focus on fashion design because the fashion industry remained one of the largest revenue generators of most nations, adding that there was a need to explore opportunities in the sector for increased job creation by and for the youth.
“We are developing these young ones to be job creators and not job seekers after school,” she said, explaining that the designs by the graduating students were of international standards.
She thanked all the sponsors particularly Ecobank, Silver Star Auto, Black Secret and Vlisco, for the collaboration and assistance in nurturing the talents of the students, and assured them of excellent output at the fashion show.
