The Western North Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has mounted a search to arrest six armed robbers who shot and wounded Number 38773G, Sgt Thomas Akoka, at Kotosaa, a village on the Juaboso-Enchi road.
Sgt Akoka had been detailed to escort a gold bullion when he was attacked, but his attempt to defend himself failed, as the A47 assault rifle he was holding failed to fire.
Information available to this reporter indicates that on Saturday April 24, 2021, one Collins Mensah, a small scale miner, came to the Juaboso Police Station and requested for armed police escort to transport his gold concentrate from Sefwi Kotosaa to a refining centre.
The District Police Commander subsequently detailed Thomas Akoka to perform the duty.
Sgt Thomas Akoka then boarded the Nissan pick-up with registration number AW 8888-20 provided by the small scale miner and driven by one Asante Augustine.
On reaching the mining site, The Chronicle gathered, immediately the gold concentrate was put into the bucket of the pick-up vehicle, six unmasked men, who had apparently laid ambush, emerged and opened fire on the police officer with a pump action guns.
Thomas Akoka, The Chronicle was further told, took cover in the bush and returned fire. But as the exchange of gunfire continued, his AK47 rifle seized to function, thus giving the robbers the upper hand to fire at him.
Addressing a news conference at Wiawso, the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Akrasi Mensah, confirmed the incident and added that the robbers succeeded in stealing the gold concentrate.
He said a reinforcement team moved to the site and rescued the Sergeant and the driver, while 10 empty cartridges were found at the scene. The officer was consequently admitted at the St. Thomas Hospital and has since been discharged.
