The Afia Kobi Library Complex, which is situated at the Children’s Park at Amakom in Kumasi, has eventually been awarded on contract for rehabilitation.
The rehabilitation of the abandoned library would be funded under the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).
The Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Library Authority, Mr. Samuel Ofosu Frimpong, who disclosed this to the Ashanti File, noted that a library is an important resource for learning and, therefore, an indispensable tool for children’s continuous learning process.
He said the project comprises fencing the library and developing the park to an appreciable standard, adding to the number of libraries in the region, which stands at nine, currently under the management of the Ghana Library Authority.
Mr. Ofosu Frimpong said the project would commence as soon as the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly drives out squatters on the premises.
The Afia Kobi Library Complex, which was built by the then Ashanti Regional
Administration (now Regional Co-ordinating Council-RCC) during the tenure of office of Col. E. M. Osei Owusu (rtd), then Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) Regional
Secretary, with funds from the Regional Development Levy, was commissioned by the late Asantehene, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, on December 27, 1990.
It was formally handed over to the Ghana Library Board by the Ghana National Commission on Children in November 1994, but had been abandoned, and the infrastructure therein left to decay, rendering the facility a waste of public resources.
It has since been neglected and became an eyesore, as it became a haven for criminals and lunatics, while the Park served herds of cattle as a grazing ground.
