The Paramount Chief of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area, Awulae Amihere Kpanyile III, has established a scholarship scheme for Senior High School students within his traditional area.
Known as the Amihere Kpanyile III Scholarship Foundation, the scheme was established in 2018. So far, a number of students have benefited from the scheme.
The scholarship scheme places emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.
To qualify for the scholarship, an applicant must score an aggregate of between six and 24, be a resident of Eastern Nzema in the Ellembelle District, and pass an interview.
The interview for the 2021 scholarship was held at the Palace of the Paramount Chief.
This year, the scheme received a total of 274 applications from Junior High School graduates. Out of the number, 34 were awarded scholarships after the interview.
However, a number, who were refused scholarships, either did not score the required grades, or were found to come from financially abled homes.
According to an interview panel member, Francis Amihere, “Amihere Kpanyile Scholarship is targeted at the needy, and not the rich. So when we realise that you are from a home that can cater for your education, we will not waste time on you.”
Francis Amihere said the 34 students who were penciled down for scholarships proved that they came from poor homes, and, thus, needed the scholarship.
He continued that though the scholarship was targeted at needy students in the traditional area, it had to extend it to cover two other students who came from outside the traditional area.
“This is the first time we have extended [it] to cover other needy but brilliant students outside our traditional area.”
SCHOLARSHIP PACKAGE
The beneficiaries were each presented with a truck, “chop box,” one mattress, one bed sheet, a mosquito net, 20 exercise books, a pillow, and toiletries.
Each beneficiary would also be given an amount of GH¢180.00 as allowance for their termly expenses.
Awulae Amihere Kpanyile said he identified education as the highest priority and, as a result, would want to contribute his royal widow’s mite to support the development of education in his traditional area. He said the scheme had been developed to provide full scholarship to promising but needy students from the traditional area.
