The Public Relations Officer for Sunyani Central Prisons in the Bono region, DSP Johan Nii Narh Nartey, has said social distancing observation is one of the challenges facing the inmates.
According to him, it has been difficult for inmates at the facility to observe social distancing because the cell has taken more than its capacity.
He, therefore, called on the government to expand the facility so that it can properly accommodate the inmates.
Speaking on a Sunyani based radio station, DSP Narh Nartey said notwithstanding the challenges, management of the facility has created a quarantine cell, where the new inmates are lodged for two weeks before they move them to the main cell.
“This is to ensure that the new ones do not infect the inmates with the virus”, he explained.
Touching on other challenges facing the Sunyani Central Prisons, he expressed worry over the inadequate water supply to the facility in this COVID-19 era.
Currently, the Bono region has recorded 765 cases with 659 recovered, 98 active cases and eight deaths. So far, a total of 9 cases have been recorded in three schools in the region.
In a related development, the Bono Regional Communication Director of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Asare Bediako Seth, has called on Ghanaians to desist from politicising the fight against COVID-19, as it hinders the country’s efforts.
Expressing concern about the rate at which the virus is spreading, the NPP Communication Director called on everyone to strictly adhere to the safety protocols, as it is the only way to fight the virus.
Touching on the Speaker’s decision to suspend Parliament over some MPs and parliamentary staff testing positive for the virus, Asare Bediako Seth described it as a step in the right direction.
The Sunyani East constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) blamed the government for the surge in the COVID-19 cases in the country, noting the protocols were relaxed during the elections and the Christmas festivities.
He, therefore, urged the general public to adopt strategies to boost their immune system and strictly adhere to the safety protocols.
Meanwhile, Zoomlion Ghana Limited has embarked on a disinfection and Fumigation exercise at some fifty (50) police facilities in the Bono Region. The exercise was part of the government’s effort to curtail the spread of the novel pandemic.
Addressing the media, the Bono Regional Manager for Zoomlion, Mrs Esther Abayeta, said her office deployed a total of one hundred and twenty (120) officers from the National and the Regional offices for the exercise.
She said the need has come for this exercise to be conducted, since the police are a major stakeholder in ensuring the strict adherence of COVID-19 safety protocols, hence may be at risk of coming in contact with persons with the disease.
Mrs Abayeta entreated the general public to strictly adhere to the safety protocols as the virus is real and has been claiming lives in the country and the world at large.
