Mr. Seth Oduro, Communications Manager for the Fomena independent candidate, Mr. Andrew Asiamah Amoakoh, was on Sunday brutally assaulted by some followers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He was at Dompoase, a community in the Fomena Constituency, distributing accreditation cards to polling agents as part of preparations for the elections the following day on December 7 when his assailants, believed to have been engaged by his opponents, pounced on him and subjected him to severe beatings.
His assault is in apparent reaction to his quick debunking of news that Lawyer Asiamah Amoakoh had resigned from the contest over the weekend.
The Communications Manager’s cell phone was taken away from him while he was being pummelled by his attackers. Oduro has since lodged a formal complaint with the local police at Dompoase near Fomena, pending investigations.
Mr Asiamah Amoakoh, who decided to go independent after claims of having been treated unfairly by party executives ahead of the NPP primaries in June 2020, has rubbished the claim of his withdrawal, stating that it was being circulated by his opponents just to reduce his chances of winning the race for a second term.
“I am still in the race and the last person on the ballot paper. This is a complete falsehood circulated by persons with malicious intent. They see me as a threat and would want to use that to demoralise my supporters,” he stated.
Meanwhile, there are unconfirmed reports of arrests in different parts of the constituency in an attempt to intimidate voters to vote against the independent candidate.
According to the reports, some six macho were arrested in a taxicab at Dadwen and Akrokerri on election day.
