Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” – Jeremiah 29:7
INTRODUCTION
We’re called to pray for God’s blessing and protection over the city and country we live in.
We’re called to both work and pray for the peace and prosperity of our nation. Faith in action is an important part of the Christian life.
We’re called to pray and intercede for our nation. And then we’re called to put those prayers into action and work for that peace we pray for. Prayer shifts our hearts to align with God’s so that we know how to act and the best way to honour Him through those actions. Spend some time today praying over our elected officials, our business leaders, and our cultural leaders. And then find one way you can take action to bring about the change you want to see.
We have 3 more days to December 2020 elections, after endless months of campaigning, soul-searching, and debates, we will go to the polls and cast our votes for the next president of Ghana. Christians everywhere are being reminded that God is in control.
As believers, we can rest in the assurance that God will stand with us no matter who is elected as President. So remember to cast your vote, and do so without fear. Let us rely on the Bible and God’s grace to discern how we should vote according to Christian morality and principles. As in all things, pray for guidance and be sober-minded when deciding your vote and with the election results.
RELEVANT SCRIPTURES
May these Scriptures for election day calm our anxieties and help us rest in God’s peace.
- Proverbs 19:21 – Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.
- Acts 1:21-26 – Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.” So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.
- 1 Corinthians 1:10 – I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.
- Romans 14:19 – Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.
- Philippians 4:6-7 – Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
- Romans 13:1-3 – Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.
- Deuteronomy 1:13 – Choose some wise, understanding and respected men from each of your tribes, and I will set them over you.”
- 1 Timothy 2:1-2 – I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
A PRAYER FOR ELECTION DAY
Holy Father, Thank you for the opportunity to have a voice in the way my government runs. I praise you for the vote that I have. During this time of debate, diffusion, and decision-making, please have Your sovereign hand over this country. Please keep our country healthy during this season. Give us the peace that passes understanding about the vote, and the outcome. You Word says that You change the times and the seasons, so You are in control of this phase in our nation’s history. I ask for the season to not be volatile, and that our nation would see You in it. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
Advice to voters by John Wesley as recorded in his Journal of October 3, 1774:
- 1. Vote, without a fee or reward, but for the person we judge most worthy.
- Speak no evil of the person we voted against.
- Take care our spirits are not sharpened against those that voted on the other side.
Stay Blessed!
