A 41-year old man seeking to lead the Peoples National Convention (PNC), Mr. Samson Asaki Awingobit, says the party is not dead, and that it is alive.
According to him, an election is not always about winning ultimate power and that in case there is a run-off, the smaller parties become king makers. The smaller parties also negotiate for power sharing deals, and thus effectively curing the winner takes all mentality.
Speaking at a meeting he organised for regional secretaries of the PNC at Akyawkrom in the Ejisu Municipality, Ashanti Region, he urged them to rally behind him to enable him lead the PNC in the 2020 general elections.
He told the party leaders that he will work with the structures of the party, and that they should give him the mandate to lead the party. “No political party in this country can survive if it does not work with its regional chairmen, secretaries, because they are the king makers,” he said.
Samson Asaki Awingobit, Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, was the parliamentary candidate for the PNC at Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region during the 2008 General Elections. He has also served as the Constituency Youth Organiser of the party.
Donning a smock designed in PNC colours, he pleaded with the party leaders to bring back members who are demoralised.
Mr. Awingobit noted that if someone is a national leader, the person cannot take on another role, and this has been their challenge as a party.
In a post interview with the media, Samson Asaki Awingobit said Ghanaian youth can take up leadership roles in Ghana, and, therefore, urged them to get involved in politics.
Using the western European nation of France to back his claims, he argued that Emmanuel Macron won the French election at the age of 40, and that the Ghanaian youth can also make this to happen in Ghana.
Mr. Samson Asaki accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) of collapsing businesses of Ghanaians, just because these businesses are owned by their political opponents.
The Ashanti Regional Secretary of the PNC, Sulemana Seidu, on his part, told the media that Asaki Awingobit invited them to sell the vision he has for the party to them.
According to him, the flag bearer aspirant has showed that he has something good for Ghana, adding that the PNC has the men to make Ghana great.
“It is not going to be easy this time around. We are really going to provide an alternative to the NPP and NDC,” he said.
Asked if the party is not a dormant political movement, Secretary Sulemana responded that the party is not dead, and cited the good works of Dr Edward Mahama and Bernard Mornah to buttress his argument.
