Two separate groups – the Ahafo Generals and Ahafo Newmont Apprentice have donated a number of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) worth thousands of cedis to health facilities in Ahafo Region to help fight against the novel Coronavirus.
The items presented by The Ahafo Generals to the Ahafo Regional Health Directorate’s office at Hwidiem, capital of Asutifi South District, include 30 boxes (1500 pieces) of facemasks, 20 boxes (each box has 100 pieces) of gloves and 60 bottles (200ml) of Maxim hand Sanitisers.
Those from Ahafo Newmont Apprentice were 4000 piece of gloves, 1000 pieces of facemasks, 80 bottles (500ml) of Sanitizers and four (4) gallons of liquid soap.
Presenting the items to the Regional Health Directorate, the Chief Administrator of The Ahafo Generals, Winfred Kofi Ofori Adjei explained that currently Ahafo is among the three regions with no COVID-19 case, according to Ministry of Health (MOH) statistics.
On the basis of this, the group thought it wise to assist health facilities in the six assemblies (Asunafo North, Asunafo South, Asutifi North, Asutifi South, Tano North and Tano South) with the PPE, which will play a major role in fight against COVID-19.
Winfred Kofi Ofori Adjei, affectionately called Nana Ofori, who is the founder of the group said, he spoke with some people numbering 20 to solicit for funds to purchase the items for the facilities, because for the region to effectively fight the virus, all hands must be on deck.
He emphasised that there is no way the government alone can curb the pandemic, especially the supply of PPE and that, all must help the health professionals who stand at a greater risk.
On behalf of the health facilities, the Regional Health Director, Boakye Boateng thanked the group for the items and assured of distributing them as directed by the donor.
He added that the items have brought some relief to them because the absence of PPE made the task challenging.
He stated that all measures are in place to ensure that Ahafo residents are safe when it comes to COVID-19.
In Kenyasi, a Member of Newmont Ahafo’s Apprenticeship Training Programme, Franklin Boakye, during the presentation, said Ghana is fighting an invisible enemy (coronavirus) so they decided to contribute GH¢12,000 to buy PPE for health workers in Asutifi North and Tano South Districts to help prevent the dreadful virus.
“Once health workers are sound in terms of PPEs, little effort would be needed to fight it,” he stated.
The Health Director of Asutifi North, Foster Nyarko, applauded them for using their allowances to buy PPE to help fight the virus, which is gradually infecting more people on daily basis.
He promised to distribute the items in accordance with their wishes to assist the health professionals to have sound mind to work.
He appealed to others to emulate what the members of the group, who are still in school, have done to help curb the spread of the virus.
