The fight against the novel Coronavirus in Ghana has taken a political twist, with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) being blamed for running a parallel campaign alongside government.
The development, which has met condemnation by a section of the public has seen president Akufo-Addo urging the media to take politicians off the picture when discussing issues on COVID-19.
According to the President, there are experts, serious, responsible and excellent people with a lot of information who, when going to talk about the disease, will do so from the viewpoint of science.
“When people are going to talk about this disease (Coronavirus) they will talk about it from the viewpoint of science. Get the scientists. Let them be the ones to talk. Get those who have specialist information. That is what I will encourage you to do.”
President Akufo-Addo said these on Friday, 24th April, 2020, when he met with the leadership of the National Media Commission, the Ghana Journalists Association, the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association, the Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana, as well as the leadership of State-Owned media organisations on the COVID-19 pandemic.
Though the President recognised that politicians would want to comment on everything, he did not see why politics should be involved in COVID-19 discussions.
The President rather wants to see the airwaves being filled with information that the scientists churn out.
The President used the opportunity to commend the Co-ordinator of the Ghana COVID-19 Task Force, Dr Asamoah Baah and the Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr. Nsiah Asare.
