The Chronicle’s investigation into the Tema New Town shooting incident on Thursday has revealed how the policewoman was tormented before being shot by the Naval Rating. A source close to the Policewoman, L/Cpl Francisca Tengey, has given The Chronicle a minute by minute account of what actually happened at the scene.
According to the source, L/Cpl Tengey who hails from Klikor in the Volta Region was among a team of police personnel detailed for Operation Covid-19 lockdown duty in front of the Old Police Barracks at Tema New Town on Thursday. She and her colleagues had gone to relieve their colleagues who had spent the previous night at the checkpoint. Upon her arrival at the duty post, she reportedly put her hand bag under the shed erected for their rest and stood by the barricade.
At this juncture, the three armed Naval Ratings who also spent the shift with their police counterparts sat awaiting their relieves. Suddenly, Able Seaman (AB1) Bekoe advanced to the rear of the Policewoman who he had reportedly gazed constantly with intimidating eyes.
The unusual look from the sailor made the Policewoman to feel jittery hence moved towards the shed but was allegedly followed by the armed rating. The source continued that, the lady who marked her 33rd birthday last Tuesday mustered courage and went back to the checkpoint, but with a close eyes on the soldier. All of a sudden, the seaman shot at her for which she shouted ‘Jesus’, ran into the barracks and called for help.
The armed rating again corked the gun and let go another shot, this time to unknown target.
A male police sitting across the road ran to safety and personnel in the barracks went to her (L/Cpl Tengey) by providing first aid before rushing her in a policeman’s car to the Port Clinic at Tema Community One.
The health facility ordered that the wounded be sent to the Tema General Hospital.
Meanwhile, the Military Police who are also investigating the incident on Thursday took the suspect now under close arrest to reconstruct the scene. The Military Authorities as part of their Investigation are expected to be with the Policewoman now going through pain to hear her side of the story. More soon.
