From Michael Boateng, Sunyani
Global Media Foundation (GLOMEF), a human rights and anti-corruption media advocacy organisation based in Sunyani, has congratulated Mrs. Evelyn Ama Kumi Richardson on her nomination and subsequent confirmation as Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
Mrs. Richardson, who becomes the first female to occupy the Sunyani MCE position, was a lecturer at the Sunyani Technical University.
She was endorsed overwhelmingly with a 100% votes on Friday, May 5, 2017, when all the 49 assembly members present voted yes to prove their readiness to work with the President’s nominee.
Mrs. Richardson, who expressed her profound gratitude to God for bringing her this far, and also to the President for offering her the opportunity to serve the people of the area, pledged to work hand-in hand with all stakeholders in the municipality to ensure rapid development.
In a statement signed by Richard Kofi Boahen, Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications, GLOMEF is undoubtedly positive that given Mrs. Richardson’s vast experiences over the years in various areas of human endeavour, she would perform creditably in her newly-found role to further project the image of Sunyani, and see to the timely execution of development projects in the Municipality.
GLOMEF is calling on the new MCE to hit the road running, by putting in place appropriate measures to address some key challenges confronting the Sunyani Municipality, especially, issues about sanitation, the occasional shortage of water in the municipality, the springing-up of unauthorised market centres at certain residential places, and teenage pregnancies among others.
According to GLOMEF, it has been observed that some traders, mostly women, are gradually turning parts of ‘Area One’ and other places, including bus stops and pavements into markets with a variety of items being sold there daily.
This, they noted, is creating serious congestion and inconveniences for motorists and residents in a number of ways.
“The point must be clearly made that there are designated places for trading and for other economic activities, and so the new MCE must enforce the appropriate bye-laws to bring some sanity into the Municipality,” GLOMEF stated.
The statement continued that the days when Sunyani was described as the “Cleanest City” in Ghana can only be brought back, only if pragmatic and results-oriented measures are taken to address some of these major issues.
GLOMEF called for the clearing of all traders on both sides of the ‘One-Way’ road linking the main taxi rank and the market square to ‘Area Two’.
GLOMEF assured Mrs. Richardson of their readiness to provide all the needed support and encouragement to make her tenure memorable and successful.
