I have so much gotten accustomed to reading or hearing about campaign drives in the UK in support of charitable causes in Ghana. Rarely would you hear of a fund raising drive in Ghana to support a cause in the United Kingdom. This indeed is what makes this story interesting. A fortnight ago, I had the privilege of visiting a terminally ill young boy all the way in Southampton in the UK. I retuned a broken man. Today, much to my joy, the B. Com Alumni network UCC a registered association in Ghana leads an urgent campaign to raise GH? 55,000 (£10,000) to save Phelan Jordan’s life.
Phelan is a four-year-old bubbly young boy (of Ghanaian heritage) diagnosed with Neuroblastoma (A rare form of cancer that forms in certain types of nerve tissue that affects about a 100 children in the UK each year). Doctors have said he has a ten percent chance of survival. He lives with his parents and two brothers in Southampton (UK) where he is currently on palliative care treatment. Oblivious to his condition, he gets on with life like any four-year-old child would do. He is unaware of his parent’s race against time in their effort to save his beautiful life. Phelan is simply lovely, handsome, witty and adorable!
When Phelan Jordan was just 18 months old his mother (Cynthia) noticed he was not walking properly on his right foot when she picked him up from nursery. A scan at the hospital later revealed that Phelan had an aggressive tumour which was growing. It was later diagnosed as Neuroblastoma. Young as Phelan is, he has had uncountable intensive chemotherapy treatment, radiotherapy, immunotherapy treatment, a stem cell transplant as well as surgery to remove the tumour from his stomach all in the effort to save this young admirable life. There was a brief moment of relief when he was given the all clear by the doctors. Sadly, this was short lived and a more aggressive cancer has returned. Now the family is trying herbal and nutritional treatments alongside his daily radiotherapy treatments.
“We simply do not have a choice but to try and find a cure for our own Son. “We cannot just let him slip away without trying every option. We know treatment in the UK is expensive and we cannot afford it, with Cynthia not working but we simply do not want to regret not acting and giving him a chance to live”. (Dad&Mum)
- Com Alumni Network UCC Association supports this worthy cause as part of its core mandate of supporting its members in their professional and social welfare. Interestingly Phelan’s mother is a proud member of the B. Com Alumni Network UCC (2000 year group). It is therefore not surprising that they have taken on board the urgent need to raise the much needed money for Phelan’s complimentary treatment alongside his daily radiotherapy treatment. “Every parent’s worst nightmare is unfolding in our very eyes. We must act and act fast to save this LIFE”. Says Pamela Desbordes the president of the association. The association’s social responsibilities go beyond this. Not too long ago, they helped raise money to sponsor a little girl in Ghana, to undertake open heart surgery in India. B. Com Alumni Network UCC is truly a well-organised non-profit making association of past students of the UCC Bachelor of Commerce programme with members working in various sectors across the globe. The pioneering year group of this association is the Class of 2000.
This excerpt of the President’s message as published on their website; ww.bcomalumninetworkucc.org sums up the core mandate of the alumni.
“Bachelor of Commerce Alumni Network UCC (B. Com Alumni) is indeed a vibrant Alumni whose values, principles, ethos and goals will outlive us. We shine as a torch amongst some of the finest and best professionals in every corner of the globe. I am confident that as we network and share ideas we shall excel and continue to write our names in the history of mankind. It is with this collective spirit that we have come together in partnership to ensure that the generation of UCC Business Students who come after us are given the best possible help, support and preparation to take advantage of the opportunities they get in life. There is a lot to do as we partner with each other and others in shaping the future of UCC Business School. I believe we can do it. Yes, we can!”
