From Richard Owusu-Akyaw, Kumasi.
A first year chemical engineer student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has committed suicide in her room, leaving the university community devastated.
The police explained that on Friday morning, the 18-year old first year student was found dead in her Independence hall room with a nylon rope fastened to her neck and hanging from the ceiling.
Her body has since been deposited at KNUST hospital in Kumasi.
The death of Adwoa Agyarkwa Anyimadu-Antwi, first daughter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Asante Akim Central constituency in the Ashanti region, Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, has thrown the inmates of Independence hall into a state of agony.
The deceased is said to have locked the main entrance to the room to avoid being rescued, but rescuers who heard her screaming while taking her life, forced open the entrance into the room, only to find her hanging dead on a rope.
A note the late Adwoa Agyarkwa Anyimadu-Antwi left behind read: “I am sorry to disappoint you mummy and daddy for not being the girl you want me to be”.
It is unclear what might have triggered the suicide, but sources at KNUST campus says she failed one of her courses and couldn’t bear the shame, hence the suicide.
The acting assistant register of KNUST, Kwame Yeboah Jnr, who spoke on Kumasi-based LUV FM expressed shock at the incident, stressing the school is saddened by this unfortunate incident and assured the public that the school authorities would investigate the circumstances leading to the suicide act.
Mr. Yeboah stated the Counseling department of KNUST will counsel students on how to manage their emotions and others.
DSP Boakye Ansah, the KNUST district police commander has revealed that investigation is underway to establish the death of the student.
