The parliamentary candidate for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) in the Ashaiman Constituency of the Greater Accra Region, Atta Ayetey, has signalled his victory, with over 60,000 votes in the upcoming elections, which, he says, will take Ashaiman by storm.
According to him, his assessment of the other candidates had revealed that they were bereft of ideas to salvage the devastating conditions of the people, hence his conviction that the electorate would vote against them.
The 46-year-old contractor pointed out that compared to the other contesting candidates, he had lived in Ashaiman for over 30 years, and could boastfully tell what the people were going through, how to help mitigate their plights in the short term, and also give proper meanings to their lives, going forward.
In an interview with The Chronicle yesterday, the PPP candidate could not fathom an observer’s evaluation of him on the political front that he cannot beat the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, as he was relatively new in the race.
Atta Ayetey said the NDC candidate could only be praised for splashing money in order to induce the voters to cast in his favour, but that did not mean he would be ignored by them.
“I don’t have that kind of money. He (NDC candidate) calls himself a philanthropist, because of the money he gives out.
“Unfortunately, I don’t have that kind of money …you will be surprised I am funding the campaign all by myself,” he stated.
The father of one decried the situation, whereby most institutions or bodies across the country would want to lend supporting hands to only NDC and New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidates, saying, “I have sought sponsorship from various quarters, but they are not willing to help. The best they tell me is to resort to the bank that my flagbearer has established.”
The depressing responses, he remarked, would, however, not deter him from engaging the people and selling himself to them.
“I have taken my campaign to several homes, churches, market places and so on, and I can tell you, for a fact, that I am the one the people of Ashaiman have been waiting for,” he said.
Campaigning on the heels of “Operation winning the parliamentary seat …a Vote for a New Ashaiman,” the PPP candidate has a ten-point agenda to help rebrand Ashaiman.
They include: “A new Ashaiman with jobs for the people, with cleaner environments, with good road networks, with improved security for the people, with good infrastructure, and a New Ashaiman with a modern recreational centre.”
The rest are; ” A new Ashaiman with quality, accessible and compulsory education for every child; a new Ashaiman with low crime and drug use rate; a new Ashaiman with a good image, and a new Ashaiman that gives you value for your vote.”
KB targets health improvement in second term
From Inusa Musah, Tema
Kofi Brako, Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema Central, says he will put a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds in the constituency to attend to the immediate health needs of the aged.
Presently, the area has no CHPS Compound, and the MP, who is seeking his second term as a law maker on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), explained that a CHPS Compound is needed as an intervention to control ailments, especially when health service has become expensive. The health facility would be sited at populated areas.
Popularly known as KB, Kofi Brako told a section of the press at his second Free Health Fair that the CHPS Compound would have a trained nurse solely attached to it, and whose additional responsibility would be to visit patients’ homes with service packages for women and children.
The facility would, additionally, have a volunteer and a committee set up to help reach homes, and to educate residents on the need to live a healthy life to avoid catching any diseases.
That way, he said, his constituents would have a longer life expectancy.
The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) had targeted constructing a great number of CHPS compounds in all the constituencies – Tema East, Central and West – in the metropolis, in order to get health care closer to the people, particularly, in densely populated areas.
Tema East and West have a couple of the facilities completed and functioning, however, Tema Central was yet to see the ground broken for a similar health facility from the Assembly.
Mr. Brako’s target for his second term in office was welcomed by the over 900 people, including the aged and weak, who accessed the Free Health Fair, where health personnel from the Tema General Hospital and New Crystal Health Care attended to their various health problems, including breast cancer, hypertension, diabetes, ear, nose and throat.
The MP explained that the exercise was non-partisan, “because a good leader does not discriminate. The health of every resident is my priority.”
Kofi Brako solely financed the health fair, at a cost he declined to mention, explaining that what was more important to him was his ability to willingly serve the constituents.
On the need for his re-election on December 7, Mr. Brako said he had served Tema Central very well, and was hopeful of getting re-elected on December 7.
