According to the President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Peter Zwennes, the American fighter was only using diversionary tactics to make Commey complacent. He has, therefore, called on the Ghanaian to focus on fighting Lopez next.
The 22-year-old fighter has said that he is not in the right frame of mind to take up Commey’s fight despite earning a mandatory shot at the Ghanaian’s title after a unanimous decision victory over Masayoshi Nakatani in a title eliminator.
Lopez noted that there were several family issues during the build up to his fight with Nakatani which, he said, contributed to his poor performance against the Japanese pugilist.
In a chat with the Graphic Sports, Mr Zwennes said he was confident Commey would prepare adequately to face Lopez to would give him the opportunity to prove his prowess to the entire boxing fraternity in America.
“I don’t want to believe that the Commey-Lopez fight will not take place because he remains a mandatory challenger and I feel it is a diversionary tactics. Commey must keep his focus and train harder for Lopez in order not to be complacent because that is how I feel,” he said.
Meanwhile, the 32-year-old Ghanaian champion remains unperturbed about Lopez’s decision to have his family issues sorted out before fighting him and stated that he was prepared to face the American next.
Commey is undefeated in his last five bouts against Hedi Slimani, Alejandro Luna, Yardley Cruz, Isa Chaniev and Raymundo Beltran, with his previous four wins being knockout victories. Read Full Story
