Former Ghana international Mohammed Polo has expressed doubts about the readiness of local players for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying only Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare is worthy of a place in the Black Stars squad.
Polo, a four-time African Cup of Nations winner, noted that the standard of the Ghana Premier League has declined sharply in recent years, limiting the national team’s options.
“Apart from Benjamin Asare, no Ghana Premier League player is quality enough to be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup," the AFCON winner told Connect FM.
Reflecting on recent domestic clashes, Polo added: “The quality of the Ghana Premier League has gone down drastically. I watched the Super Clash the other time and didn’t enjoy it because the players weren’t good enough.
“Despite the red card Hearts of Oak in the game, Asante Kotoko couldn’t create anything significant in the game, and all went down to quality."
The Black Stars, preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. Ghana will face Panama on June 17, England on June 23, and Croatia on June 27.
As part of their preparations, the team will hold friendlies against Austria and Germany in March, followed by a final warm-up match against Mexico in May.
The Ghana Football Association has confirmed the squad will be based at Bryant University in the United States throughout the tournament.
