This came to light when the team from GIZ CAADP ATVET for women in Agriculture Engineering Directorate of MoFA and Agric Today Media paid a visit to the Farm to evaluate one of the women who were trained in the tractor operation maintenance and management.
Equatorial Farms, located at Peki in the South Deyi district of the Volta region and noted for producing vegetables and Pineapple for export suspended its operations since December 2018.
Upon investigations, Agric Today Media learnt that the farm was suspended as a result of mismanagement by the management and the general attitude of the farmers which led to workers demonstrating against management.
The manager of the farm, who decided to speak under condition of anonymity, said the previous management mismanaged the farm operations.
According to manager, there was a general lack of supervision on the part of management; and this, the manager said, affected the company’s operations.
“The packed house is very sensitive area as far as export is concerned because at that stage if good commodities are not packaged it would affect the factory when it gets to the destination” she added.
The farm manager also noted that lack of timely payment of monthly salaries to the workers caused agitations which led to the demonstrations.
“The management normally pays the workers after three months of work so there are always arrears of three months ahead to be paid to the workers. But this time around the workers agitated demanding their full salary payment and as they demonstrated the management asked them to go home.”
Hon. Ernest Mallet, the District Chief Executive Officer of South Dayi, explained that government’s position on this matter is to resurrect the farm. According to him, government is doing everything possible to get the company back to its feet in the shortest possible time.
