Ghana international Thomas Partey is scheduled to appear in court a day before Villarreal face Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League.
The 32-year-old midfielder was charged earlier this summer, just four days after leaving Arsenal, with five counts of rape involving two women and one count of sexual assault against a third. The alleged offences are said to have taken place between 2021 and 2022 during his time in the Premier League.
Partey had been due to appear at the Old Bailey this week, but the case was adjourned until Monday, September 15. Villarreal will travel to London the following day to take on Spurs, where Partey is expected to receive a hostile reception if selected. He has made three substitute appearances in La Liga so far.
His transfer to Spain was met with protests both domestically and abroad. Arsenal Supporters Against Sexual Violence, who staged demonstrations outside matches last season, criticised the lack of transparency around the case.
Under his bail conditions, Partey is barred from contacting the alleged victims and must inform police of any permanent address or travel changes.
