Africa's football leader Ahmad Ahmad says the memorial centre for the the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda must be maintained as a reminder for future generations to ensure that it doesn't happen again.
The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Mr. Ahmad made this call when he made a sobering visit to the Kigali Memorial Centre during his three-day official visit to Rwanda
The CAF President donated his personal money of $2,000 to help in maintaining the centre where up to one million innocent Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed in the genocide in 1994.
Ahmad made the donation to the Kigali Memorial Centre to aid the campaign of continuous genocide prevention and the fight against genocidal ideology.
“This centre has to be maintained such that the next generation can learn from this history such that Genocide can never ever happen again across the globe,” Ahmad said.
The Malagasy had a first-hand sense of the horrors of the past when he led a football delegation to visit the 1994 Genocide spot, the Kigali Memorial Centre, where most of the horrors took place.
The CAF boss was accompanied by Rwanda FA president Vincent Nzamwita , Largadere Director Idrissa Akki, Celestin Musabyimana, Organising Committee of the Africa Cup of Nations Member, CAF Presidential Advisor Hedi Hamel and Rwanda FA Executive Committee members among others.
Ahmad laid a wreath on the mass graves, took a tour of the centre to get an understanding of how the people were massacred before leaving a message in the guest book.
“These are sad memories that we should let the next generation to know and such kind of acts to never happen again," the CAF President said.
"We join hands with Rwandans who lost their loved ones during this tragic 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
"We must jointly ensure that there is a better future for those who survived and for the generations to come. May the souls of victims of the genocide give hope to a rejuvenated Rwanda.”
Ahmad is embarking on a massive transformation of CAF and his endeavors in Rwanda and elswhere since taking charge of the body has won many hearts as he is seen as the leader who is sensitive to the issues of Africa.
