Ghanaian referee Abdul Latif Adaari and his assistants escaped mob attack after they were chased by angry Tema Youth fans following their 2-1 defeat at home to Ebusua Dwarfs over the weekend.
The angry fans descended heavily on the match officials with attempted blows and kicks in what could have turned into a catastrophic episode.
The fans accused the referee of bias and attempted to lynch him.
But the timely intervention of the security personnel prevented what could have been a bloody situation.
The referee and his assistants Issaka Badiu Alhassan, Isaac Quaye and fourth official Alex Anning were held 'hostage' for close to 30 minutes before being escorted out of the stadium.
It all started when the allegedly biased match referee brought proceedings to an end before the stipulated three minutes added-on time.
The rowdy mob turned against the match officials and invaded the pitch. Sensing danger the officials had to take to their heels to find solace in the arms of the security apparatus.
With blows and flying kicks taken centre stage, they were just saved from lynching as the police reinforcement team from the Tema Regional Police Command SWAT came to their rescue.
Striker Nicholas Gyan and skipper Joseph Esso scored the goals for the visitors with Mohammed Tawfiq grabbing the consolation.
