A team of modern-minded leaders, including; the Metropolitan Chief Executive for Tema, Mr Felix Mensah Annang-La, the Tema Mantse, Nii Adjei Kraku ll and the Commander of the Tema Regional Police Command, DCOP Akrofi, collaborated to demolish the 60-year-old building.
In its place, a new two-storey is being built to provide Tema New Town with a Police Station that better fits its status as the native heartland of Ghana’s first industrial city.
The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive last week led a team of engineers and architects from the Tema Police to the site of the old station to start demolition.
The old building, a colonial relic, became a source of concern when deep cracks developed in several parts of it.
A concerned Police command then informed the TMA and then came up with a plan, to supplant it with a new one.
Consequently, cell inmates at Tema New Town were removed and transferred to nearby Police Stations, while the Assembly prepared to pull the old building down to pave way for the construction of the new one said to be a one storey building.
Last week, the Tema Mantse, Nii Adjei Kraku ll himself started a campaign to get big businesses in Tema to contribute money towards the construction of the new Police Station.
Last week, Nii Annang La moved to the site with a team of engineers after he had toured some examination centres hosting Basic Education Certificate Exams (BECE) candidates in the Tema Metropolis.
While the demolition was going on, he basked in the admiration of his constituents who thanked him for the quick response to their request for a new Police Station to end the constraint to go all the way to Community One to report cases.
Later, the Tema MCE said in an exclusive interview that he expected the building to be completed on time so that the people of New Town could have some respite. :
“None of us is happy about the current situation, where they have to go far away to report cases. We are also aware that the absence of a Police Station means the absence of an important form of deterrence for wayward people, and so we have asked the contractor to speed up work so that we can have the station ready as soon as possible.
