Accra, May 31, GNA – Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), has been appointed a Board Member of the Global Covenant Of Mayors for Climate Change and Energy (GCoM) in the United States.
In that role, Mr Sowah would work to galvanise city climate action across Africa, set the strategic direction of the organisation and work to elevate the voice of cities on the global stage.
The GCoM is the largest coalition led by the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for Climate Change, Mr Micheal R. Bloomberg, with more than 9,200 cities across six continents and 132 countries, representing over 800 million people of the global population.
Also, more than 110 African cities are now signatories of the Global Covenant of Mayors, representing a total of 109 million people, and those cities have demonstrated a strong will to cut emissions and tackle the effect of climate change.
A statement issued in Accra and copied to the Ghana News Agency said Mr Sowah's role on the Board of GCoM was a strong acknowledgement of both the work being done in Accra, and the strategic importance of the Region in the international fight against climate change.
It said Accra was fast growing at a rate of 3.8 per cent annually and planned to become the most vital economic hub of Africa, yet, Ghana's economy is hardest hit from poor sanitation.
Accra had also pledged to deliver inclusive climate action that benefitted all citizens and to ensure emissions cut to meet the Paris Agreement’s expectations by next year, the statement said.
Mr Sowah, in his acceptance speech to the GCoM, was quoted as saying: "It is an honour to join GCoM and sit with peers from cities across the world to deliberate on problems cities faced and the impact it could have on the lives of the people.”
He continued that Accra was committed to continuing to take urgent action on climate change and being a proactive player in partnering with local and international development partners to implement bold local initiatives that impacted globally.
Some of the initiatives, Mr Sowah hopes to achieve, include the development of sustainable transportation, the use of renewable resources in the public space and the launch of open–space greening projects.
