Sunyani, April 21, GNA – Mrs Patience Opoku, a former President of Brong-Ahafo Regional Association of Baptist Women Missionary Union (WMU) has stressed the need for the elderly to educate the youth on the norms and values of the Ghanaian culture.

She said as a multi-ethnic and multi-lingual country, the Ghanaian culture was multi-faceted pertaining to different tribes and ethnic groups with each of them having some sort of unique principles and values that dictated the “dos and don’ts” of the people.

According to Mrs. Opoku who was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the recent moral degeneration among the youth at a service of the Calvary Baptist Church at Newtown, a Suburb in Sunyani, there was the need for parents and guardians to intensify education on discipline and good moral lives in the society.    

She expressed worry about the kind of irreligious and unpleasant dressing of the youth these days, which she described as highly abominable.

Mrs Opoku stated “that is very shameful to themselves, parents, guardians and the entire nation” because “it is a disgrace to our culture. Adding to aggravate matters, they take naked pictures and videos and post them on the internet,” she added.

She assumed the situation among other factors could be as a result from of the negative use of Information, Communication and Technology and the lack of emphasis on culture, religious and moral education at the basic and second cycle school levels.

Mrs Opoku stated that Jesus Christ died to save humanity from sin and the continuous indiscipline lifestyles of the youth, therefore, rendered “Jesus Christ’s sacrifice for us meaningless”.
