Accra, March 20, GNA - The Ghana Police Service has interdicted three Police Officers allegedly involved in the assault of three staff of the New Times Corporation, producers of the Ghanaian Times Newspaper.
The Officers are: Inspector Isaac Opare of the Ministries Division, Accra; Sergeant Ebenezer Akrofi, Accra Regional Police Headquarters; and Lance Corporal Evans Kofi Ntim of the Police Visibility, Accra.
A statement signed by the Assistant Commissioner of Police David Eklu, the Director General of the Public Affairs Directorate of the Police Headquarters, said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) had directed the Accra Regional Crime Officer to take over the investigation of the case from the Ministries Police Station.
It said the IGP had also instructed the Commander of the Accra Central Motor Traffic Unit to take over the Motor Traffic Accident aspect of the case, and asked both to submit report in one week.
The Police Professional and Standard Bureau (PPSB) has also been directed to look into the conduct of the Police officers who were on duty at the Ministries Police Station when the incident was reported.
On Thursday, March 14, there was a reported assault on Mrs Raissa Sambou Ebu and Malik Sulemana – two Ghanaian Times reporters, and a driver, Salifu Abdul Rahaman, leading to the collapse of Mrs Ebu, a nursing mother.
The victims reported that a police officer, with an unregistered motorbike, rode at top speed and crossed and jumped the red light at the Tudu Traffic Lights, and in the process smashed one of the side mirrors of the Corporation’s vehicle being used by the journalists.
The driver, subsequently, overtook the motor bike and blocked it in a bid to confront the rider over his action.
This resulted in a rage and their subsequent assault at the scene and at the Ministries Police Station, where they were sent.
However, Mrs Ebu was sent to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) for medical attention.
