Accra, March 13, GNA – Coach Joseph E. Sarpong, a former Kumasi Asante Kotoko coach, has blamed the team’s recent draw at home to Sudanese side, Al Hilal, on the players, saying they were nervous in the game.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko drew one all with Al Hilal at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi in the last group home match of their Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Confederations Cup.
Many of the teaming fans of the Kumasi based club were left disappointed with the results, as a win would have sealed a qualification into the next stage of the competition.
Coach Sarpong in an interview with the GNA Sports said, the Kotoko players in their last match “were all nerves” in a bid to replicate the 3-0 score line over Nkana FC.
“The expectations were too high on the part of the supporters. They were overtaken by the Nkana results, thinking they could run over Al Hilal in the the same manner,” he said.
He said Al Hilal took advantage of the pressure on the Kotoko players, looked more comfortable and played like a home team.
Coach Sarpong said, the result was frustrating but the Kotoko players needed to be commended for their effort in the competition thus far.
The Porcupine Warriors travel to Ndola to play Zambia’s Zesco United in the last group game on Sunday. Only a win would book a ticket for the record Ghanaian champions into the next stage.
