Tamale, March 6, GNA – Some youth in the Northern Region marked the 62nd Independence Day celebrations at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale on Wednesday with the exhibition of political cartoons seeking to draw attention of duty-bearers to challenges in their communities.
The youth numbering 10, who were from Mion, Saboba, Karaga, and Kumbungu Districts, and Savelugu Municipality, designed the cartoons that depicted issues of lack of potable water, poor road networks, and conflicts especially between Konkombas and Chokosis.
The youth, who received support from the Youth Empowerment for Life, a non-governmental organisation, under its Empowerment for Life Programme, told the Ghana News Agency that they believed the cartoons were capable of drawing the attention of authorities to their plight.
Master Issifu Inusah, one of the cartoonists from Saboba, whose cartoon drew attention to the bad nature of the Kpalba Bridge, which linked Yendi to Saboba, appealed to authorities to help fix the bridge to facilitate an-all-year-round transportation.
The Kpalba Bridge always gets flooded during the rainy season cutting off communities on both sides, a situation, which affects transportation and business activities of the people.
Miss Magdalene Anyame, another cartoonist from Saboba, whose cartoon depicted the perennial conflicts between Konkombas and Chokosis at Saboba and Chereponi, said the conflicts had affected economic activities of the people.
Mr Abdul Ganiyu Alhassan, Technical Advisor on Advocacy, Youth and Gender at YEfL under the Empowerment for Life Programme, said the use of cartoons formed part of YEfL’s strategy to help the youth to speak about issues affecting their communities and appealed to stakeholders to help find find solutions to the issues raised by the youth.
