Bolgatanga (UE), Dec. 11, GNA - The Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) in the Upper East Region have pledged support for the reviewing of the National Youth Policy, to make it proactive and champion the development of youth in the area.
The reviewed Youth Policy would draw a guideline to generate an agenda that would make place for all to come on board in order to develop new programmes that would develop all persons in the youth category.
The MDAs represented by their Chief Executives, said it would be in the interest of the Assemblies to have a laid down agenda for youth development, since that would help the communities to grow.
They said this at the National Youth Authority Regional Stakeholder’s consultation on the review of the 2010 National Youth Policy in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region.
Mr Bright Acheampong, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, National Youth Authority, in a presentation, drew the attention of the MDA’s to the importance of having a proactive national youth policy, because it would set a time line for the duty bearers such as the Chief Executives and other stakeholders to enforce the implementation of certain programmes that would help the youth.
The policy vision, categories, objectives, principles and values among other things when given a good review, would help in developing programmes that would grow the youth in all categories including age, sex and circumstances, among others.
He said it was good that the MDA’s were supporting the review as the employment of the youth remained a priority and the capacity of the youth needed to be enhanced to enable them take advantage of wealth-creating opportunities in their own environment.
Mr Acheampong urged the youth in the Region to compliment the MDA’s effort by making good use of opportunities such as the Nation’s Builders Corps (NABCO) to change their fortunes.
Madam Paulina Patience Abayage, the Upper East Regional Minister, in a speech read on her behalf by Alhaji Mahamudu Asibi Azonko, the Chief Director of the Upper East Region Coordinating Council, said the development of the youth was government’s priority and it was committed to ensuring that a youth policy was put in place to develop the youth.
“The youth policy must reflect in the African development agenda so as to enable them meet the requirement of other nations on the continent,” she said.
The Regional stakeholders’ consultation review, which was going on simultaneously in the three Regions of the North brought together the traditional authority, youth groups, Municipal and District Chief Executives and partners to deliberate on the 2010 National Youth Policy.
