Sunyani, Oct. 19, GNA – The management of the Sunyani Nursing and Midwifery Training College (NMTC) has debunked media reports that both male and female students of the institution shared the same sanitary facilities.
The College authorities condemned the purported publication that has gone viral on various social media platforms describing it as untrue.
Mr David Amalba Ayinne, the Principal of the NMTC refuted the story, when the Ghana News Agency went round to inspect the level of infrastructural development at the College and stressed that only female students are being accommodated on campus.
Established in 2004 with only 40 students, the Principal said, the College was fast growing with a current student population of 1,150, comprising 300 males and 850 females.
He said the College can boast of several physical infrastructural development projects such as adequate lecture halls, modern sanitary facilities, ICT centre and skills laboratories.
Mr Ayinne said with funding from its Internally Generated Fund (IGF), the College on Thursday December 14, 2017 inaugurated a two-storey administration block constructed at the cost of GH¢195,000.00 and a modern library project.
He said plans are far advanced for the College to construct modern hostel to accommodate males on campus. On academics, the Principal said, performance of students has improved in the past three years, saying that the College recorded 96 per cent pass rate in Registered General Nursing (RGN) and 98 per cent in Registered Nursing Assistance in the 2016/2017 academic year.
He said because of its infrastructural development and improvement in student performances, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has approved the College’s application to start degree programmes in Nursing and Midwifery.
The College was only waiting for the Ministry of Health for degree programmes to be commenced, Mr Ayinne said, but currently the College is also collaborating with the KNUST for students to do top-up programmes and other courses, the Principal said.
Mr Ayinne said the door of the College is opened to the media at any time and appealed to journalists and media practitioners to be circumspect in their reportage by endeavouring to cross check their facts whenever they intended to do any publications about the College.
Meanwhile, the Students Representative Council (SRC) has condemned the baseless and unfounded media reports on the sanitary situation and the issue of boys’ hostel at the College.
Mr Gideon Amoah Kyeremeh, the SRC President, said no student had made a complain about the College’s sanitary situation and described the media publication as a ploy to dent the image of the College.
He told the GNA that all the water closet facilities on campus and at the boys’ hostel were working well, and advised the students to contact the student body whenever they had issues with management rather than rushing to the press.
