Good neighbourliness fosters security - Prampram Police Commander

Tema Dec. 17, GNA - The Prampram District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Issah Mohammed Cantona says crime fighting goes hand-in-hand with good neighbourliness.

"It is sad when we live with our neighbors and don't even know their phone numbers which is very wrong because being friends with ourselves protects the neighborhood from intrusion," he said.

DSP Cantona said this after the residents of Eagles Nest Community at Dawhenya in the Ningo Prampram District, Greater Accra Region, donated a motor bike worth GH¢ 4,000 to the Prampram District Police Command to aid in their patrol activities in the area.

They also used the occasion to inspect the police station which was under construction in the area which was funded solely by the residents.

He observed that the police could not be around at all times so the neighbours could watch each other’s back if they were on good terms by calling the attention of the police and neighbours whose properties might be under attack.

Presenting the bike, the Chairman of the Eagles Nest Community, Mr Sawer, said the area was under constant attacks by robbers with an average of two attacks in a week "and so the community felt that it was necessary to put up a police station and provide them with some mobility to get the police closer to them.

Answering the question of the need to form a neighborhood watch committee, Mr. Sawer observed that some of the youth in the area had questionable characters and therefore could not be trusted with security issues.

He appealed to land owners in the area to either develop their lands or frequently clear weeds and trees from them to prevent criminals from using them as springing boards and hideouts to attack residents.

Mr. Sawer also appealed to government and the District Assembly to construct the road that led to the community which was in a very bad shape, adding that "if the police station is completed and the road is bad the police can still not give us the security we need."

He pledged that under his watch, more motor bikes would be purchased for the police and fully fuelled by the community for the police to carry out their duty of securing the area.

The police station building, which has reached the roofing level, would be completed by March 2018.

It would have female and male cells, a CID office, a station officer's office, washrooms, and a-two-room apartment for the police personnel.
