Drobo (B/A), Oct.12, GNA - Drivers and passengers using the Berekum-Drobo 30-kilometre road have appealed to the government to rehabilitate the highway which is in a very deplorable state.
The road is full of potholes and its deplorability is worsened during the rainy season.
The drivers say if the road is not rehabilitated as part of government’s priority road projects it could cause continuous breakdown of vehicles and consequently increasing road accidents.
They made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Drobo in the Jaman South District of Brong-Ahafo Region.
The drivers complained that their vehicles had been developing faults because of the bad and vehicle-unworthy nature of the road and therefore pleaded with the government to consider that among the nation’s priority road projects.
According to them, the economic benefits to be derived from its rehabilitation were enormous because it linked a lot of cash and food crops farming communities in both the Jaman South and North Districts as well as connecting routes from Ghana to Cote D’Ivoire.
The drivers lamented that driving on the stretch was so frustrating when because of its muddy and slippery nature in the rainy season and noted that some drivers who try to avoid the potholes tend to crash into others jeopardizing the lives of passengers.
Some passengers expressed the hope that the government would listen to their bawl.
Mr. Adjei Tuffuor, a farmer said the area is one of Ghana’s food producing districts but due to the bad nature of the roads, food buyers found it difficult to get to the farming communities to buy the produce to the marketing centres.
Mr. Tuffuor expressed regret that the food crop farmers therefore produced at a loss because they annually experienced food glut during the bumper harvest and that alone was very discouraging the youth in the area to go into in farming, he added.
