Accra, May 20, GNA - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration on Saturday undertook a health walk to keep fit ahead of the celebration of the 54th African Union (AU) day on May 25.
This year’s AU day, being celebrated on the theme: “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investment in the Youth” is characterised with outlined activities by the Ministry to commemorate the celebration including the health walk.
Participants walked from the premises of the Ministry, through to the Flagstaff House, continuing from the switchback road and back to the Airport Junction, where the Ministry is located
Speaking after the walk, Mr Edwin Adjei, the Acting Chief Director at the Ministry said the walk was in line with the programmes outlined by the Ministry for the celebration of the AU’s 54th anniversary.
He expressed appreciation to Ambassadors and Commissioners who participated in the walk and the Deputy Minister for the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Mr Mohammed Habbib Tijani.
The Deputy Minister in his address said, the health walk had numerous benefits to the groups that participated saying, it served as a platform for socialisation and networking, which was healthy for development.
Mr Tijani said the health walk had helped to publicise the celebration of the AU day to the citizenry as people could be asking the purpose for which the group was marching in the street.
In an interview with Ghana News Agency after the walk, Mr Sebastian Beliwine, the Deputy Director at the Ministry said the AU’s focus changed from the attainment of independent of member states to the integration for development as a region, which necessitated this year theme.
Participants of the health walk, who were a little over 100 civilians and the forces, included staff at the Ministry, members of the diplomatic corps and the security services.
He said other activities lined up for the celebration included flag raising ceremony, which would be honoured by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the President of the Republic of Ghana and Cocktail night for the African diplomatic missions in Accra to share of their local dishes.
