Tamale, May 16, GNA – Bamba Islamic Institute – Ghana (BIIG) has launched a programme to engage traditional and Muslim leaders to promote community development and help attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
BIIG will collaborate with the Northern Regional Coordinating Council, Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, National Commission for Civic Education, National Population Council, Department of Social Welfare, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the Department of Children to undertake this initiative.
Sheikh Amin Bamba, Imam and Chief Executive Officer of BIIG, who launched the initiative, said the objective is to break cultural and religious barriers to the full realisation of SDGs at the regional level.
Sheikh Bamba said the high rate of illiteracy amongst people in the region has denied majority of the people of critical information needed to make economic, political and social decisions to improve their livelihood.
He expressed the hope that increased engagement among traditional leaders and Muslim religious leaders would accelerate development in the communities.
He said maternal and infant mortality were very pertinent issues affecting the development of the region hence the focus of BIIG’s initiative.
Mr Salifu Saeed, Northern Regional Minister, whose speech was read on his behalf, said the Regional Coordinating Council was ready to partner with BIIG as its initiative was in line with the policies of government.
Mr Saeed urged other non-governmental organisations to partner with BIIG in fashioning out the project to bring development to the region.
