Yikurugu (UE) May 15, GNA - Mr Zougmore Sulemane, 45 year old Burkina Faso national was shot dead on the early hours of Monday by armed robbers at Yikurugu, near Zebilla in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region.
The armed robbers attacked a 207 Benz bus in which Mr Sulemane was travelling in with other passengers in the wee hours of the day.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Huno Broni in charge of the Bawku West District Police Command confirmed the attack in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Zebilla.
ASP Broni told the GNA that the command received information on the attack and armed police personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene.
He said upon reaching the scene, the Police saw four empty shells of AK47 assault raffle with the deceased in pool of blood, he was then rushed to the Zebilla government hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
ASP Broni said according to the passengers on board, the robbers ordered them to surrender their belongings but the deceased refused and was shot by the robbers without any further provocation.
ASP Broni disclosed that an amount of GH¢2,941 and an Identity card bearing the deceased’s name was found on him when he was searched.
He said the body has since been deposited at the Bolgatanga Regional hospital morgue, waiting for identification and collection.
ASP Broni said that as part of efforts to provide security to travelers, the command would soon embark on escort services to commuters on that stretch of the road to ensure their safety.
He said robbery has become rampant in the area and that the police were making efforts to curb the menace.
He recalled a similar robbery early this month when a group of robbers attacked the Group of Nduom Bank (GN) at Binaba near Zebilla and made away GH¢26,945.34.
He advised traders, travellers and customers of the various Banks to be cautious with the people they relate with, because all these attacks come as result of information given out by insiders.
