Accra May 15, GNA - An Accra Circuit Court on Monday delegated a lawyer to explain court proceedings to Akua Donkor, Founder of the Ghana Freedom Party who was allegedly robbed by her close associates in December Last year in the on-going trial.
This was because Madam Donkor informed the court that she did not understand the English language and would need some interpretations of the evidence of Jonas Gebe, a Police detective Sergeant.
The prosecution had earlier called its fifth witness in the person of Sergeant Gebe, who was the case investigator.
She had earlier on raised her hand as soon as the matter was called but she was signaled to speak to the prosecution if she had any problem.
After the prosecution had communicated with her, the trial judge asked that a lawyer seated close to her should endeavou to interpret the proceedings of the court to her.
As the proceedings progressed, the court asked GFP flagbearer whether she understood it which she responded in the affirmative.
The accused persons are Yakubu Yusif, trader and Central Regional Chairman of the GFP; Banabas Kayase, her driver and secretary of the party; Opoku Agyemang, trader and Abdul Razak Shaibu, a member of a GPRTU taskforce.
Two others, Joe and Nuamah aka Lion, are currently on the run. The accused persons are on remand.
Mounting the witness box, Detective Sergeant Gebe narrated how the two of the robbers were handed over to him to investigate the matter and how the other accomplices were arrested by the Police.
On December 30, last year, the fifth prosecution witness said he was on duty at the Odorkor Police Station when Yusif and Kayase were arrested by the Police at Lapaz and handed over to him for further investigations.
According to Sergeant Gebe, Madam Akua Donkor accompanied Yusif and Kayase to the Police Station and reported that she was on her way to the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) at about 3:00am and 4:30 am with Yusif and Kayase to catch a flight.
The Police officer said Madam Donkor said on reaching Sowuotuom, near Agbeve Clinic, Kayase the driver slowed down and put on his traffic indicator and suddenly received a phone call from Agyeman demanding where they were.
Detective Sergeant Gebe said not quite long Razak Shaibu, one Joe also known as Nuamah crossed her car with their motor bike, and then attacked the complainant and robbed her of 30,000 dollars and GH?3,000.00.
The accused persons also took away a black travelling bag containing Madam Donkor’s documents including Passport, Voter ID card, Air Ticket.
Through investigations, the witness said Agyeman was arrested and during interim investigations Yusif and Kayase informed the Police that they were members of the Ghana Freedom Party and that the complainant had promised them some money but she had failed to honour her promise.
Due to that, Detective Sergeant Gebe said the accused persons hatched a plan to kill Madam Akua Donkor and take custody of her vehicle and other properties.
Witness said at the meeting, the witness said Yusif indicated that “killing was one of the highest offices on earth,”hence he knew Shaibu who was good at robbery and he could carry out the act.
The Police officer said on December 31, this year, Yusif led the Police to arrest Shaibu at A-Lane in Awoshie, Accra.
This according to the witness was after Yusif had called Shaibu to meet him to collect his share of the booty.
“On seeing me at the spot Shaibu jumped into his vehicle and attempted to hit me with his vehicle. I skipped and landed into a gutter thereby sustaining injuries on my legs.” the witness told the court.
Witness said he then signaled other undercover Police officers and Shaibu was arrested at the Santa Maria Traffic Light.
The Police Officer said when Shaibu was interrogated, he mentioned Joe aka Nuamah and one Lion all at large as his accomplices.
The Witness said Shaibu told the Police that he and the two accomplices now at large received 7,000 dollars each.
When Shaibu’s room was searched 4,000 dollars was retrieved and he (Shaibu) took the Police to a spot at Anyaa where they shared the money and Madam Akua Donkor’s black bag was found.
The witness alleged that Shaibu and his two accomplices however preserved 5,000 dollars for Yusif, Kayase and Agyemang.
