Accra, April 5, GNA - Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited (GGBL) has called on corporate bodies to join hands in creating an effective waste management programme in Ghana.
A statement issued in Accra by Mr Gabriel Opoku-Asare, Director, Corporate Relations, Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited, said the company made the call during a clean-up exercise held at the Sakumono Titanic Beach.
It said the event which was in partnership with NShoreNa, Citi FM, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and ZoomLion was aimed at influencing behavioural change among inhabitants of Sakumono and its environs.
It also called for a collaborative effort in fighting the waste menace in Ghana.
Madam Luck Ochieng, Sales Director of GGBL, said “several studies indicate that much of the municipals solid waste from developing countries are generated from households (55 – 80 per cent), followed by commercial or marketing areas (10 – 30 per cent) with varying quantities from streets, industries, institutions among others.”
She said all households must, therefore, consider the end effect of throwing rubbish in the open environment.
She said government could not do it alone, adding that a plastic recycling plant for example, was one sure way of improving waste management in Ghana.
She said coupling that with policy reforms to make use of recycled products, “we will be on a good trajectory to solving our environmental issues.”
Ms Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the immediate past Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, reiterated the importance of keeping the environment clean.
“My work is to promote Ghana through culture and the creative arts but your responsibility is to ensure that you help keep this beach clean,” she said.
Mr Kodjo Akoto Boateng, Project Coordinator of NShoreNa and Co-host of Citi Breakfast show, said “at NShoreNa, we enjoy engaging in such environmentally friendly exercises, creating opportunities in the community and educating them as well. We don’t intend to stop there.”
He said the company intends to organize clean-up exercises every fortnight with the community and businesses that could support, adding that “we will come out with ways to sustain the activity in the following weeks so as to make Sakumono Beach an example to other communities.”
