Accra, April 3, GNA - Master Kow Asafua Jackson, captain of Team Ghana, during the just ended Africa Junior Swimming Championship in Egypt, has said, the competition provided them the opportunity to gain international experience.
Asafua Jackson, who qualified for the finals of the competition but failed to win a medal, said, they have gathered enough experience and mental toughness as individuals and as a team.
According to the Soul Clinic International School student, “the trip has helped us to work on our mental toughness and it’s a sign of greater things to come as we look forward to the Olympics.
Maayaa A. Ayawere, a student of the British International School, who was the only female in the team to make it to the 50 meters breaststroke, said it was a learning process for the entire team.
"Over all I placed 6th and the competition was exciting with all the challenges that came our way.
"It is a learning process, as we keep focused on the future and the Olympic games".
Miss Farida Ayishatu Iddris, Treasurer for Ghana Swimming Association (GSA), disclosed that all members of the team, have qualified to the World Junior Swimming Championship slated for 23-28 August 2017, at Indianapolis, USA.
Miss Farida, who is also a Federation Internationale De Natation (FINA) referee, noted that aside the financial challenges the team encountered, the trip was a success.
"The trip was a bit challenging, since there was no funds from the sports ministry or corporate bodies.
"We presented a budget that was to cater for accommodation, food, air ticket, physiotherapist and a pre-competition training. We also pay for the use of the Burma camp pool for our swimmers, since there is no official pool at the stadium".
According to her, it was the aim of the team to have at least two swimmers qualify for the finals.
"Before departure the team had decided to have at least two swimmers qualify to the finals, since it was their first competition and also first time the county was partaking in an African Junior Swimming Championship".
She congratulated parents of the participants for funding the participation of their children in the competition.
