Zebilla (UE), March 16, GNA - Students of the Zebilla Senior High-Technical School in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region, attend classes under trees as most of the classrooms have been converted into dormitories.
The two ground floor compound dormitories that housed more than 600 students got burnt in 2014, forcing the school authorities to convert most of the classrooms into dormitories for the boys.
Mr Richard Akumbas Ayabilla, the Headmaster of the School, who said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Zebilla said even though government had provided some infrastructure, most of it had been abandoned during construction.
He said some the projects included an administration block, two- storey boys dormitory, 12 unit classroom block, a compound boys dormitory, six unit flats for teachers, an assembly hall and a fence wall.
Mr Ayabilla said when completed it would improve teaching and learning and promote quality education in the area.
The Headmaster said the school was a science oriented institution with a student population of 1,604, but could not boast of a well-equipped science laboratory.
He said the situation had over the years been making the teaching and learning of science difficult.
On the part of staff accommodation, the headmaster said 75 per cent of the teacher staff stayed outside the School making the enforcement of discipline difficult.
He pointed out that in the midst of the challenges the School had been performing well in both academic work and the extra-curricular activities.
Mr Ayabilla said about 50 per cent of the students passed and gained admission into the tertiary institutions in the country.
He called on the Old Students Association, non-governmental organisations, and philanthropists to support the School to address its challenges.
The School begun as a community day school in 1982
